I’ve shivered my way through a winter of discontent, gruffly waiting for the sunlight at the end of the tunnel.
I squealed with delight, as I spied my first jonquil, and did a little dance, as the blossoms burst forth across my neighbourhood. These signs gave me hope. The gloom I had been cloaked in, was about to depart and my hibernation could finally come to an end.
On the 31st of August, the sun was putting on a show, providing a preview of what September might bring and I was the happiest I had been in months.
My fantasies of warmth and a world bathed in your fresh, Springtime glow, were quickly quashed, by what can only be described as winter’s unrelenting grip.
I am freezing!!
It is raining!!
There is wind and that wind is vicious!!!!
I HAVE HAY FEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will happily tolerate hay fever, if I can lay on a lawn, surrounded by daffodils - but sneezes caused by an icy breeze, were never part of the deal!
If it seems like I am angry, you’d be right.
I want to wear shorts. I want to run through a goddamn field of canola, wearing thongs and a maxi, (because I need to hide my winter-body.)
I know it’s early days, but you’ve got to give me something.
I need a lifeline, because any more weather like this and I’m not going to make it.
So, here’s the deal.
I will come out of my cave, with all the enthusiasm of a child jumping out of bed on Christmas morning! I will live my best life. I will eat right and move more…. I just need a little motivation, and that’s where you come in….
I need to see the right side of 20 degrees.
I need you to stop dressing up like Winter and embrace who you really are.
You are blue skies and sunshine. You are freshly mowed lawns and hyacinths. You are light breezes, carrying too much pollen, but I love you anyway!
Because you are my gateway to Summer and that is where I really come into my own.
So, please stop faffing about. No more delaying the inevitable.
The footy finals, the horse races, the first BBQ of the season…. it’s all waiting for you to put your best foot forward, so let’s do this thing!
