Hope Lives Here....let's get serious for a second.

In a world where there is so much to want, it is easy to forget to give. I try hard to remember often just how lucky I am, but even I get caught up in velvet dreams sometimes.

When walking the tightrope of life, it is important to keep your balance. I’m always hopeful of a safety net, but just in case, I do my best, to do my best. My best involves loving my kids, helping my friends and family whenever I can, eating well, attempting mindfulness and being charitable as often as possible.

In honour of being charitable, this weekend I will be participating in Wyndham’s Relay for Life.

Raising money for cancer research is a no-brainer. Cancer does not discriminate. This awful disease impacts young and old alike, making its presence felt wherever it goes.

On July 8th, 2010, my Nonna finally lost her battle with cancer. I will never forget the feeling I had, when my dad delivered the news… I had been fast asleep at the time, but the grief in my father’s voice had been enough to wake me in an instant.

Nonna had been sick for ages – the cancer was eating into the woman we all knew and loved. Despite knowing that the end was not far off, my heart ached from the finality of it. This was my first real encounter with death and it was hard to take.

7 years have passed now, but still I long for her warm embrace – she gave such epic hugs. Her smiles and laughter were wonderful to behold and her constant attempts to feed us, regardless of our hunger levels, made her hilariously endearing – the memories fill me to the brim.

I honour her when I Relay, but I also Relay for Hope – a Hope that I will never lose another person I love to cancer.

If you’ve never been to a Relay for Life event, let me paint a word picture….

Rain, hail, wind, sunshine – whatever the weather, we march together. A sea of purple and yellow polo shirts, all walking (some running), united by a simple notion…. Hope for a world without cancer.

We stand unified, forever bonded by our collective desire to effect change. There is no negativity – for 24 hours, we are just happy to be a part of something bigger than us. And it really is big! In the past 5 years, Relay for Life has raised $108,000,000.00!! That’s a lot of zeroes!

The spirit of the community is overwhelming and I take such pride in being a part of it. It also warms my heart, to have my children by my side as we work towards our goal.

In just a couple of days, I will walk myself ragged. Every year I go home in so many kinds of pain, but I relish the challenge of it – never shying away from the effort, because what do I have to complain about, really?

I’m blessed in so many ways.
